Undergraduate Research Opportunity

Six undergraduates will be mentored by geoscientists from the University of Oklahoma, as well as the University of Novi Sad, Serbia and University of Zagreb, Croatia, on methods of analyzing modern and ancient dust deposits within the west-central Balkans (Serbia and Croatia), and interpreting their origin and paleoclimate significance. Student research projects will consist of field work, sampling, lab analyses, and presentation of preliminary results. The time in Serbia and Croatia will include a number of cultural excursions to visit sites spanning the history and culture of the region from the fragmentation of Yugoslavia, back to Roman times and even to archeological sites where Neolithic cultures burgeoned.

We are particularly interested in recruiting students from universities or two-year colleges that have strong interests in research related to dust deposition, loess, soils, agronomy, and climate change, as well as the implications to agriculture and history. We will consider all levels, particularly in the case of students from two-year colleges, but prefer students that will complete their undergraduate degree in 2026 or later. All expenses (travel, room and board in the Balkans) is paid by the project. In addition, each student will receive a stipend. See attached flyer for more information.
